This Chip Tray Sample Storage System was designed as a permanent storage and library reference system for oilfield drilling samples from oil or gas exploration.
This system overcomes several historical issues with oilfield drilling samples:
- The thin plastic and paper envelopes previously used were not transparent that made viewing samples difficult.
- They often split, got lost, or were too bulky for efficient storage that made past geological analysis difficult to access.
The sample trays are manufactured in a durable plastic called GP Styrene, which has excellent clarity for microscopic examination, and the fluorescence in oilfield samples can be reliably seen under ultraviolet light. The trays are stackable, allow easy access, and will not deteriorate over long storage periods. The wooden sample storage boxes hold the sample trays securely, and are also stackable and durable.
The storage system comes in two designs:
- A shallow 5-compartment tray - the plywood storage box fits 102 of these or 510 samples (sample size per tray 20-25 grams)
- A large 5-compartment tray - the plywood storage box fits 54 sample trays or 270 samples, and basically double the height of the shallow trays. The large tray holds approximately 50 grams per tray of washed and dried sample.
